Relationships for Seniors

In America there is growing trend of senior citizens seeking relationships due to the death of a spouse. The purpose many seek another relationship is because many have a fear of becoming lonely, depressed or isolated. Doctors have conducted studies that have shown that maintaining an active relationship thought the later years in life can make a positive impact on your health. I could not agree more personally.

About two years ago my grandmother (who I was very close to) passed away leaving my grandfather (her high school sweetheart) behind. He is a healthy senior citizen; however he does not include himself in any new relationships or activities since the passing of my grandmother. His daily routine consists of driving 20 miles to the cemetery to visit my grandmother and basically sitting around the house each day doing nothing. Over the next few years he would greatly benefit if he engaged in a relationship with someone else or became more active. There are various activities that seniors can do as couples to remain active and lead a healthy happy relationship.

Going for walks together – You have been on this earth for over a half a decade surely you have something to talk about. If you are healthy enough go for a walk and just have a casual conversation about things that have occurred in your life, your ups and downs, happy times and sad times. Health wise walking is very effective in maintaining good health. Going for walks on a regular basis can decrease your chances of having cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other killer diseases as well. Walking can assist you in living longer and can also provide mental health and spiritual benefits.

Go to the doctor together- As you get older you will most likely need to go to the doctor more often than in your younger years. If time permits go together. You can provide continual support for each other especially if by chance the doctor presents bad health news. This can be detrimental in the recovery or acceptance of the health issue. Having someone there to provide comfort and encouragement also will help with your personal mental stability.

Play sports together- even though you all are seniors you can still lead an active sporty lifestyle. Agree on a sport that you all can both benefit from and perform. If you are healthy and strong you can choose sports such as basketball or racquetball. If you have aged and don’t feel young enough to engage in aggressive sports, fishing or golf may be a better sport to choose. Many sports and senior leagues can be found at your local YMCA
